Word sneak with Steve Carell - a nice costumizable vocab activity to start your lesson with
This is one of my favourite vocabulary revision activities of all time... just give it a try, and your students will enjoy it!
Time: 10 mins
Level: B1+
Materials: 5 post-its per student, this video
Procedure:
1. Pair your students, give 5 post-its to each student and ask them to write one word on each card from the last lesson. When finished, ask them to switch card sets so that everyone has a new set. (Or: give 5 ready-made cards to each student with the vocab you want to revise) Tell them that they must not look at the cards at this point.
2. Play the video from 0:00 to 1:38. The host explains the rules of the game and they play one round. (If necessary, pre-teach moose and zucchini)
3. Tell the students that they'll have to play the same activity: they'll have to converse about a random topic (or you can set a topic), and they'll have to sneak the words in their cards into the conversation. The aim is to sound as natural as possible.
4. Monitor the conversations.
Comments:
1. If you don't want to recycle vocabulary, you can just come up with silly words or ask your students to come up with them.
2. You can work on a word sneak video starring a celebrity your students like more...
Here's a list of possibilities:
- Chris Pratt
- Melissa McCarthy
Just type "word sneak" into your youtube search bar and you'll find at least 10 videos.
