Emoji News - James Corden Show
A fun activity to warm up your students for a discussion involving the news.
Time: 10-15 minutes (depending on which steps you'd like to include)
Level: B1+ on
Materials: the video, some news stories prepared in advance, a platform where SS can post their emojis, SS' smartphones.
Aims: to develop SS' creativity, reading comprehension and speaking skills
1. Let James explain the rules of the game: Play the first 12 seconds of the video. (00:00-00.12) - You can check for understanding.
2. Watch a player guessing a news story. (It would be logical to show the first player, but he isn't really at the top of his game and the discussion there contains some words you wouldn't necessarily like to appear in your classroom - So just jump to the second contestant, starting at 07:52 and you can watch it until the end)
3. You can try out the activity with your students. Show them the following emoji news and ask them to guess what might have happened.
Show them the original headline.
4. Put your students into different groups. Give them recent news headlines or incredible, silly news items and ask them to encode them as emoji news.
5. Ask your students to post their encoding in your digital classroom or to you as a message and display the message.
Ask the other groups to decode the emoji news items.
